Subject: Natural History Museum Vrissa

I am writing to express a concern I have related to the Natural History Collection Vrissa.

I have been in contact with the Curator of the Museum since early 2011.

I have an innate interest in Natural History and stumbled upon this “Gem of the

North Aegean” in my search to learn more about the area.

Over the past few years the gentleman who runs The Museum – Kostas kostakis – has been instrumental in assisting me and providing vast pieces of information about The Museum, Vatera, Lesvos Island and Greece.

While I am perhaps a novice at this;  it has been an interest of mine for decades.  I have done the same investigation with many museums throughout the United States with the same intention which is to obtain a knowledge of the animals, fauna and minerals indigenous to various areas.

I have many ties with the Greek Heritage and Orthodox Religion.

After many years of contact with The Museum I found myself in a situation enabling me to actually visit Lesvos and meet Mr. Kostakis and visit his museum to experience first hand the many wonders he has shared with me over the years.

I am writing this from Vatera.

You can imagine the thrill I experienced the first time I entered The Museum and experienced in person the many exhibits available.

Mr. Kostakis provided me a personal tour which I observed he does for all visitors.

His presentation is quite professional and informative and makes you feel as you are living an exceptional experience.

I have visited The Museum several times and each one has left me with even more knowledge of this area of Lesvos.

It was exceptionally nice to see exhibits representing the area in the same area and not relocated to a museum far from the point of origin.

You can only imagine my disappointment and dismay when today I learned was the last day The Museum would be in operation.

I understand the need for financial scrutiny in these and all times.

It seems incredulous to me to take something away from an area that has been an integral part of it’s attraction and ambiance and representing it’s history.

I do not know the costs associated with keeping The Natural History Museum Vrissa open with Mr. Kostakis as the Administrator.

I do know it is ONE person dedicated and proud to share his heritage through this establishment.

My visit here is for two months and while it appears I cannot fulfill my desire to visit The Natural History collection again I will emplore you to reconsider the decision to close The Museum. And to keep Mr. Kostakis.

It is and would continue to be an asset to all the local communities.

Thank you!
